Crisis Intervention Procedure

  1. Protect the privacy and wishes of the family.  

  1. Verify the information regarding the crisis. One person (principal or designee) shall contact appropriate resources for verification.  

  1. Notify the CIT-D chairperson who will notify the Superintendent or designee.  The Superintendent is the only person authorized to release information to the  media.  

  1. Convene CIT-B to determine:  

  • The nature and extent of the event  

  • Number of buildings involved (siblings?)  

  • Who should be involved (other CIT-B, community agencies and services)  

  • Delegate responsibility  

  1. Initiate Action Through Appropriate Team Members  

  • Communicate accurate information to teachers  

  • Teacher (or other adults) Communicate appropriate information to students  

  • Teachers ask for extra assistance from specialists as needed (CIT-D)  

  • Teachers help students process feelings in homerooms whenever possible  

  • Teachers give information about resource people where students can go throughout the day 

  1. After Day One: Reconvene CIT-B 

  • Team debriefing  

  • Assess student and teachers needs  

  • Adjust what will be done on following days  

  1. Convene final CIT-B meeting  

  • Determine plan of action for further staff development  

  • Establish long range plan for students needing extended intervention  

  1. The CIT-D Chairperson convenes final CIT-D/CIT-B meeting  

  • Evaluate the process  

  • Plan to address identified needs
