Important Guidelines for Crisis Intervention

Media Liaison: Superintendent or Designee

Message Center: Office in each school site. All visiting support personnel should check in with office for assignment and identification.

Police or Rescue Liaison:  To be used if crisis warrants   

Site Based Phone Tree: Should include notifying all staff, including bus drivers, physical plant  personnel, food service employees, and volunteers.  

Crisis Procedure Checklist  

  1. Verify – Superintendent or Designee.  

Privacy of the family takes precedence.  

  1. Notify via phone tree and schedule team meeting.  

  2. Assess degree of impact.  

    • how many sites directly involved  

    • notify all staff  

    • magnitude of event  

    • who should be involved  

    • delegate responsibility to others

        

      1. written bulletins or letters  

      2. phone calls  

      3. classroom presentations  

    • notify other school systems  

    • prepare statement to be made available to office staff for incoming phone inquiries and media referrals  

  3. Designate counseling area at each site.  

    • designate support personnel  

    • establish procedure for self referral  

  4. Identify at-risk students. Maintain list in guidance or nurse’s office at appropriate site.

  5. In case of death, discuss plans for personal effects of deceased and involve family whenever possible.  

  6. Set up staff debriefing schedule.  

  7. Prepare statement to be made available to office  Staff for incoming phone inquiries and media referrals.  

  8. Delete name of deceased from computer and any files.  

  9. Meet to debrief and to discuss following day’s activities.  

    • what happened that day  

    • what are students’ and staff’s issues and concerns  

    • plans for memorial service, if appropriate  

  10. Meet for post-crisis debriefing, critique and long-term follow-up.
