Last school year, South Portland Middle School in Maine hosted nine events—including a staff talent show fundraiser and a Family Pancake Breakfast—that brought families, students, and staff together to celebrate student success, strengthen relationships, and create a sense of belonging.
Guided by the Community School strategy, and supported by district and union leadership, the school partnered with local organizations to provide meals, fresh food, and resources at events, making them accessible and welcoming.
In January, nearly 300 people attended the 2nd annual Family Dinner to eat together, make crafts, dance, and enjoy open gym activities. In May, more than 600 people attended the Student Showcase and Dinner to celebrate students' accomplishments over the year.
This year, the school will have opportunities for students and parents to take the lead in planning—especially among 7th and 8th graders.
What started as an answer to families’ call for deeper connection has grown into a shining example of what happens when schools truly listen.
