Message from the Superintendent: October 30, 2027

We are approaching one of the most important days of the year. I don’t mean Halloween—though I hope everyone who celebrates enjoys great weather, safe fun, and no costume mishaps! I’m thinking about Election Day.

Did you know Maine allows youth who are 16 or 17 years old to pre-register to vote?

Under Maine state law, eligible high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors can complete a voter registration application starting at age 16. Once pre-registered, students are automatically added to the official voter rolls on their 18th birthday, ensuring they are ready to vote in local, state, and federal elections without delay. Additionally, 17-year-olds who will turn 18 on or before the General Election are eligible to vote in preceding primary elections. Pre-registering to vote is a meaningful way to give young people an early stake in their communities and encourage civic engagement. If your 16- or 17-year-old isn’t pre-registered yet, consider bringing them along when you vote so they can fill out a voter registration application in person.

Election Day Campus & Community Logistics

Police Presence: With increased activity across the city on Election Day, you may notice an increased police presence around our community and schools. While we are not expecting anything unusual, this is a standard preventive measure to ensure a safe environment for everyone.

SPHS Parking & Traffic: Parking will be tight on Tuesday as voters head to the polls at the South Portland Community Center. Please consider carpooling, budgeting extra time into your schedule, and driving carefully around school property.

Warm regards,
