Message from the Superintendent - January 16, 2026

Dear SPSD Families,

As you are likely aware, officials anticipate increased immigration enforcement in the near future in Maine. We understand this creates feelings of fear and anxiety for many students and families in our community. Uncertainty itself can be deeply unsettling, especially for children and families who are particularly vulnerable at this time.

As a district, we have clear protocols to protect student and staff safety and privacy, and have recently reviewed those protocols in light of current events. We are committed, as always, to the safety and wellbeing of each and every member of our community.

We are aware that some families may be concerned about students’ absences related to this situation and the impact on their learning. We are working to develop clear guidance for staff on how best to support students.

In the event of immigration enforcement proceedings that take place on or near schools, playgrounds, or bus stops, we will follow our Standard Response Protocols, specific procedures for interacting with non-local law enforcement, and guidance from community partners such as the ACLU and the Maine Law RHRC. We will also communicate clearly and quickly with families via ReachMyTeach. We have shared pertinent information with staff about how to respond in the event of an enforcement act and how to support students who are concerned about their own safety and that of their families. Please review our immigration enforcement preparedness protocols and frequently asked questions on the district website.

Our strength as a district lies in our care for each other. We are committed to student, staff, and family safety, including the emotional and mental health of our community. If you need any support, or have any questions about our procedures, please reach out to me or your building administrator. We are here to support you.

Sincerely,

Dr. George Entwistle
