Dear SPSD Families and Staff,
In recent weeks, there have been credible reports of increased immigration enforcement actions in Maine. This increase impacts our community in tangible ways, including affecting many community members’ sense of safety and belonging, worsening anxieties, and decreasing student attendance or ability to engage in learning.
In light of this, we would like to express our ongoing commitment to the safety and wellbeing of all members of the SPSD community. Families are encouraged to contact a school social worker, counselor, or principal if they have questions or need support. Staff members with concerns should contact their supervisor or the human resources office.
I would also like to direct families and staff to our Immigration Enforcement Preparedness Information and Scenarios, which were shared earlier this year. This webpage includes several resources, such as Know Your Rights information from the Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project (ILAP) and a list of local organizations providing support to families around food, housing, and legal needs. ILAP encourages affected families to submit a form to request help for a person who has been detained by immigration officials.
As always, our goal is to provide safe, welcoming learning environments for all of our students. As the situation evolves, we will continue to ensure that families and staff have the information and support they need, including through partnership with our amazing local organizations and volunteers.
The SPSD community has shown remarkable unity and resilience. If you would like to participate in ongoing community support initiatives, consider volunteering or donating to local organizations. We are grateful for all of the efforts by our staff and community members to ensure that students can complete this school year in the most positive way possible.
With best wishes,
Dr. George Entwistle, Superintendent
