SPHS Honors Physics students researched, designed, and synthesized their own physics experiments. Topics included physics of a trampoline, a frisbee throw, a Drake Maye football pass, and more! After choosing topics, conducting background research, and reading scientific journal articles, students designed posters that were printed using a large format printer. This scientific process follows similar steps as to what science students experience in undergraduate and graduate studies.

Over the weekend chess players from regional schools, including eight members of the SPHS Chess Team, competed in a tournament. Oscar Karolkowski clinched the tournament title for SPHS in the U1400 division! Neil Haskins finished tied for 3rd after a close final game in the U800 and Ian Archibald tied for 3rd in the U800 in his first tournament. SPHS now sits in first place for the season!♟️

January is School Board Appreciation Month! Thank you, school board members, for your dedication, commitment, and service to South Portland Schools. At last night’s meeting, school board members received hand-drawn thank you cards from South Portland Middle School students, expressing their gratitude to the work they do for our schools.

Last week, South Portland High School JMG students volunteered at the Community Center to assist with the Toy Drive. 🎁✨ Students gave back to their community by making signs and unloading and sorting donations.

The annual food drive is happening next week at South Portland Middle School, December 15-19! Students, staff, and community members are invited to bring non-perishable food items to SPMS to support the grade of their choice (5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th). All donations will support the SPMS food pantry and The Locker Project, who partners with the district to provide food assistance to members of the community. The grade that raises the most food will win the honor of being the 2025 FOOD FEUD CHOMP-IONS! 🦈

As a part of the OpenSciEd Ecosystems and Matter Cycling unit, students in Ms. Gartman's class engaged in a food web activity. 5th grade students took on roles of different producers, consumers, and decomposers in the nurse log system. They created a food web as they passed the blue yarn to represent matter being passed among organisms. Students had fun and learned an important concept!
