Preparation and Testing

WHAT IS THE HiSET®?

The HiSET® test is a high school equivalency testing program that will help you take the next step toward a college degree or a rewarding career. The state of Maine uses HiSET® for high school equivalencies, not GED. Your HSE credential will be accepted by every state, territory and  jurisdiction, as well as by the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. military, and federal programs.  

Test takers will be tested in five core areas: Language Arts – Reading, Language Arts – Writing, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO TAKE THE HiSET® IN MAINE? 

Age: You must be at least 17 years old. You must have withdrawn from high school to enroll in HiSET®.

Residency: You must provide a government issued photo ID and (if needed) one other form of identification with your  Maine address to prove you are a resident of Maine.  

Cost: The HiSET® program is free to Maine residents when taken through Maine Adult Education.
